Opium, or lachyryma papveris as it is properly known, is the dried latex that derives from the opium poppy. Containing approximately 12% morphine, opium can be processed chemically to create heroin, an illegal drug. Other alkaloids that can be found in opium are codeine, papaverine, noscapine, and thebaine. So how does one obtain the latex from the opium poppy?
